COVINGTON – The Covington Lady Buccs fell behind 6-0 to Milton-Union, but showed the resiliency needed to prove themselves once again in a 16-6 victory in five innings.

Milton-Union is a very talented team, which was evident as the Lady Bulldogs scored a run in the first and five more in the second to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Covington made several mistakes that assisted Milton-Union to the five-run inning – some dropped balls, poor decisions on where the ball should be thrown, and also a foot being pulled off the bag. Many teams trailing 6-0 after making those type of miscues would pack it in, but there is no quit in the Lady Buccs.

After holding Milton-Union in check in the top of the third, the Lady Buccs broke open with ten runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 10-6 lead. This totally turned the momentum as Covington continued its hot hitting streak in the bottom of the fourth.

The Lady Buccs started the fourth inning off with two runs and then loaded the bases with one out. Senior Karyanne Turner came to the plate and drilled a grand slam over right-center to push Covington’s lead to 16-6.

The Lady Buccs put another runner in scoring position, but Milton-Union was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Covington then closed out the game by only allowing one runner while recording three final outs in the top of the fifth to preserve the run-rule victory.

Overall, both teams racked up 13 hits each, but the Covington defense was stellar over the final three innings by holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless.

Karyanne Turner threw the entire game and picked up the win. She also led the Lady Buccs offensively by going 4-for-4 with six RBI and a grand slam home run.

Kamryn Barnes connected on three hits, while Jayda McClure and Ava Hartwig had two hits. Hartwig drove in three runs and scored three times herself.

The win boosts Covington’s record to 13-6 overall an 8-2 in the TRC. Next up is a road game tomorrow at Lehman.
