VERSAILLES – The Covington Lady Buccs battled extremely hard on Monday, but came up short in a 10-9 loss to Versailles on the road.

This Covington group of kids are very gritty and have the resiliency to overcome adverse situations, but sometimes a loss can happen regardless of how hard the Lady Buccs play. That is what happened on Monday in a non-conference game at Versailles.

The Lady Buccs started off strong with two runs in the top of the first, but Versailles was able to take a 4-2 lead by scoring one run in the bottom of the first, another run in the second and two more runs in the third.

After a scoreless fourth inning by both teams, the Lady Buccs took a 5-4 lead by plating three runs in the top of the fifth. Versailles responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go back on top 6-5.

Covington scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but once again Versailles was able to reclaim the momentum by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to push its lead to 9-6 with one inning to go.

There is so much fight within the young Lady Buccs and that was evident by the way they battled in the final inning. Their grit and determination led to three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 9-9 as Versailles came to the plate.

Unfortunately, Versailles was able to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning to hand the Lady Buccs a 10-9 defeat.

Covington outhit Versailles 15 to 13 throughout the game and both teams committed one error. The difference was unearned runs as Covington allowed two unearned runs and Versailles didn’t allow any.

The loss drops Covington’s record to 11-5 on the season, but the loss isn’t one that will define the season for the Lady Buccs. That’s because this group of ladies do not relent to any situations that don’t go their way.

Next up is a road contest against Northridge tomorrow.
