COVINGTON – There has been a lot of adversity the Covington Lady Buccs have had to face this season, but the toughness the girls have displayed has led to some big wins.

And Saturday’s 44-33 victory over Northridge was a perfect example of how the Lady Buccs have been able to overcome unfortunate situations.

Leading the charge was sophomore Maggie Anderson, who willed her team to victory despite injuries to Avery Koffer and Carlie Besecker. Anderson scored a career-high 30 points on eight two-point buckets, 11 free throws and a three-pointer.

Hopefully the injuries suffered by Koffer and Besecker are not serious because there is a lot of basketball left. Fortunately for Covington, junior Gracie Anderson returned to the lineup after missing two key games due to an injury. Gracie managed just one point offensively, but her all-out effort and leadership on the floor is much more valuable than statistics.

Covington opened up the contest by taking a 14-6 lead after one and pushed its advantage to 24-14 at the break. In the process Avery Koffer was forced to the bench due to an injury.

The Lady Buccs suffered another crushing injury to Carlie Besecker in the third period and managed just three points in the frame. Fortunately the defense made life difficult for Northridge as Covington held a 27-20 lead heading into the final frame.

From there, Maggie Anderson took over the game by scoring 15 of the 17 points put up by Covington in the final period. Anderson not only scored at will, she imposed her will at the defensive end as well.

The win improves Covington’s record to 10-7 overall and 7-3 in the TRC. The Lady Buccs have limited time to get healthy as they travel to Milton-Union on Thursday.
