VERSAILLES – Coming off of a heartbreaking defeat to Miami East, the Covington Lady Buccs were hoping to use Saturday’s regular season finale against Versailles as a momentum boost for the post-season tournament.

Unfortunately the Lady Buccs struggled putting the ball into the basket in a 40-27 defeat to end their regular season with a record of 12-10.

Still, Covington has 14 days to prepare for its tournament opener on February 18th against Miami Valley. The game starts at 3:30pm at Versailles High School.

Saturday was one of the cleanest games of the year as a combined 19 fouls were called throughout the entire contest. Unfortunately the Lady Buccs were tagged with 14 of the fouls, which led to 14 free throw attempts where the Lady Tigers converted on nine of them. Covington only went to the line once on a traditional three-point play and converted its only attempt.

The game was tight early as Versailles held a 10-9 lead after one and a 16-13 lead at the break.

Covington only managed six points in the third on a pair of three-pointers by Avery Koffer and Gracie Anderson, while Versailles scored 15 points in the stanza to push its lead to 31-19 with one quarter to play.

As she has done most of the year in dire circumstances, Maggie Anderson stepped up her game in an attempt to lead the Lady Buccs to a miraculous comeback. Anderson scored 8 of her 10 points in the final frame, but unfortunately her points were the only points Covington could manage in the final period.

In all, the Anderson sisters (Maggie and Gracie) combined to score 18 of Covington’s 27 points on the afternoon.
