COVINGTON – Things didn’t start off well for Covington against Milton-Union on Thursday night as the Bulldogs were red hot shooting from the floor and the Lady Buccs found themselves in early foul trouble.

It all led to a 31-20 deficit for Covington at the break. But, there is some fight in this group of Lady Buccs, which was on display in the second half.

Milton-Union’s Jenna Brumbaugh is a handful for any team and when Covington freshman Avery Koffer picked up two early fouls Brumbaugh was able to take advantage by scoring nine of her 11 points in the first half.

Koffer returned in the second half and ignited Covington at the defensive end by mirroring Brumbaugh the east of the game, holding the Bulldog’s leading scorer to just two points the rest of the way.

Covington was able to chip its way back into the game with a big third period, outscoring Milton-Union 17-9 in the frame to cut the deficit to 38-37 to start the fourth.

Milton-Union knocked down a pair of three-pointers to give itself a little more of a cushion and some momentum, but the Lady Buccs continued to battle and eventually took the lead for the first time on a three-pointer by Avery Koffer with 1:30 left in the game.

In the process the foul situation had flipped for both teams, which benefitted Covington as it was in the one-and-bonus down the stretch. Unfortunately the Lady Buccs couldn’t capitalize fully on the advantage as they missed on five free throws down the stretch as the game went into overtime with the score deadlocked at 49-49.

Covington had spent so much energy getting itself back into the game, the physical and emotional toll showed in the extra frame as the Lady Buccs only managed two points the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Milton-Union was sparked by a three-pointer to start the overtime period and never surrendered the momentum as it outscored Covington 8-2 to hand the Lady Buccs a 57-51 overtime defeat.

The loss drops Covington to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in the TRC. The Lady Buccs travel to Lehman on Saturday at noon.
