COVINGTON – Thursday’s consolation game in the Buccaneer Holiday Classic against Northwestern was Covington’s best performance of the season as the Buccs dominated in a 72-50 victory.

Northwestern brought a roster with a huge size advantage as four of its players were taller than anyone on Covington’s roster.

Yet, the Buccaneers were able to overcome their disadvantages by getting out to a fast start and maintaining the momentum throughout the entire game.

The Buccs jumped out to a 23-17 lead after one and pushed their advantage to 42-24 at the break led by sophomore Brogen Angle, who scored 18 of his game-high 29 points in the first half.

Angle was on fire the entire night as he knocked down five three-pointers, made six two-point buckets and was 2-for-3 from the line.

The Buccaneers went cold from the floor in the third as they made only three field goals and one free throw, but still maintained a 51-34 lead heading into the final period.

Covington then closed the show by outscoring Northwestern 21-16 in the final frame for a 22-point win.

Eight players contributed in the scoring for the Buccaneers with Brogen Angle leading the way with a career-high 29 points and Britton Miller scoring 10. Tanner Palsgrove finished with 9 points and Bryson Kite had 8 points.

Gunner Kimmel scored 6 points, but his effort on the glass and at the defensive end of the floor was huge for Covington against a team who had a significant size advantage.

The victory improves Covington’s record to 2-7 on the season and they will start the new year on January 6th at Riverside.
